About

North Carolina has long been in the forefront of cancer control. More than sixty years ago, the President of the North Carolina Medical Society appointed a committee to evaluate cancer in the state and to make recommendations for programs.

This committee worked with the Women’s Field Army, the forerunner of the American Cancer Society, in advocating for statewide action. Together they approached the General Assembly in 1945 and secured authorization for the Cancer Control Act, enacting legislation for the Cancer Control Program (CCP) to provide education about cancer, payment for diagnostic services, and funding for preventive cancer clinics across the state.
