Program Operation

The North Carolina Comprehensive Cancer Program (NCCCP) is one of the components of the North Carolina Cancer Prevention and Control Branch. The Program assists with the Division of Public Health services in the prevention and diagnosis of cancer and the care and treatment of persons with cancer.

This is accomplished through an integrated and coordinated approach to reducing cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality—through prevention, early detection, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliation.

The North Carolina Comprehensive Cancer Program includes:

North Carolina Advisory Committee on Cancer Coordination and Control

Formed by the North Carolina General Assembly, the North Carolina Advisory Committee on Cancer Coordination and Control (Advisory Committee) oversees the implementation of the legislatively mandated Cancer Control Plan.

  • Members (34) are legislatively designated
  • Subcommittees and work groups fulfill Plan objectives
  • A Plan that includes specific cancer control objectives are developed and written for a five year period

The objectives are monitored during and evaluated at the end of each five year period

  • Cancers and topics include breast, cervical, prostate, ultraviolet, sun safety, tobacco use, colorectal, pain control, lymphedema, and others
  • The objectives are monitored during and evaluated at the end of each five year period

Comprehensive Cancer Unit

The Comprehensive Cancer Unit funds specific projects to aid in the prevention and detection of cancers. Many of the projects are funded as a result of recommendations of the Advisory Committee. Some of the current or past projects include:

  • Sun-safety project
  • Prostate cancer study project
  • Colorectal project
  • Various tobacco projects
  • The objectives are monitored during and evaluated at the end of each five year period

Cancer Assistance Unit (We are here to help you)

The Cancer Assistance Unit(previously the Cancer Control Program) provides resources and services information and financial assistance to cover cancer diagnosis and treatment costs of eligible persons.

  • Eligibility includes 115% of Federal Poverty Guidelines
  • Other residency, financial, and medical eligibility guidelines must also be met
